THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND THE MAGIC CROWN BY KENZIE ROSE (BOOK REVIEW BY WTWC)

THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND THE MAGIC CROWN BY KENZIE ROSE (BOOK REVIEW BY WTWC)

Regardless of the outcome, for freedom, we must fight. A fantasy novel depicting the story of young freedom fighters seeking to release their kingdom against the rule of King Mali – by stealing the Talivear. It is my first time reading a fantasy novel, note that this is the first book of its series, and it amazes me how a young indie author like Kenzie brought such well-thought worldbuilding into life.

Not knowing what to expect, I asked my siblings, for they are more avid readers than me, what should the first book of a series must contain. True to their words, it is more of introducing the world and the characters to the reader, immersing them with the kind of story it is yet to unfold until the next book is released. Since TFFMC is written in multiple POVs, which is another first experience for me, it took me a while before remembering who’s who. But it helped a lot that I took notes, and as each chapter passes, their voices are easier to distinguish.

Each character has their background and motivations in life, highlighting their reasons as to why the war is their fight. I liked how the youth was presented – charming, full of aspirations, and willing. They just have to have the chance and opportunity to be listened to, bringing what they can offer to the table. Yet they aren’t perfect, make mistakes, and are in the process of learning who they are. I especially adored how the parents of James make them understand the boundaries of being in authority, not passing more worries to the children, and at the same time not turning any necessary information down.

Who’s my favorite character?

Jacob! He’s the character that has a solid voice, in my opinion, and I cannot wait to see him progress over the next books. My younger self could relate to him – anxious, afraid, but with enough love, strong. He’s so much more and he’s soon to realize that.

Here are my favorite lines from The Freedom Fighters and the Magic Crown:

1) “I hope whoever is chosen by the Talivear wants the responsibility and is
prepared to fight the war, because it would be a burden to anyone who
doesn’t.”

Chapter 9: Jacob, p.115

2) “When faced with evil, some give in, but the strong fight back. It’s your choice that matters, nothing else. It doesn’t matter if you’re Karvothian or Larcon, as long as we’re all fighting for the same thing.”

Chapter 10: James, p.121

3) “Maybe because the forest knows we’re good, and the King’s intentions were bad.”

“I don’t think the forest works that way,” Peaches says.

“I think it does. After all, it’s magic.”

Chapter 21: James, p.174

4) “I’ve never been anyone in this world, and I doubt I ever will be.”

Chapter 28: Jacob, p.247

I liked the foreshadowing of the Chosen One in this book, and I now appreciate the joy of saying, “I knew it!” when reading. After three hundred pages and more, I collected a bunch of questions I wish to be answered in the next books. Would we see behind the horrible image of King Mali? How did the Xendrens find out about the base? Does this mean the kingdom already knows where they are? Will Lila have a change of heart? So much more. Kenzie described different places set in this world and while it immediately created a version in my mind, I appreciate a map! Which, by the way, I hear is installed on the 2nd book!

If you are interested in fantasy fiction, consider reading The Freedom Fighters and the Magic Crown! I am grateful to Kenzie for letting me read her novels. Can’t wait to begin the 2nd book of this series, The Freedom Fighters and the Magikii, which is coming out this April 30th! You may also pre-order it now. Let us support indie authors! To end this review, I’d like to leave this line from the brave lady, Peaches (Chapter 34: Jacob, p.284):

“Evil doesn’t win. Evil doesn’t get to win.”
