When I Open My Eyes

An official entry for #escapril2022! Beginning with the prompt, “When I Open My Eyes,” expect daily-poetry this month inspired by different prompt events.

When I Open My Eyes

It’s not just my fight.
Fire began when they told me I can’t
Shamelessly repeating; friction sent
Dedicated to building a fortress meant

Reviving the dying parts deadly
Swore to protect me, mighty
Selfish, they had it coming salty
When I open my eyes, there’re many

Of those nearly losing or worse,
Clinging tiredly to the word “hope”
Giving their all though small, choice
Against the giants, questioned purpose

Perhaps to stand isn’t meant on my own
Hard but open to trust, better decision
Opposite the current, with them in motion
It’s our fight; take action.
